Caye Caulker is a small, beautiful laid-back island lying within the 185-mile-long Belizean Barrier Reef. It’s one of Belize’s most popular travel destinations.

Located just one hour by high-speed ferry from Belize City, the island makes an easy weekend get-away for city residents as well as international visitors. Known as Belize’s more budget island, Caye Caulker has accommodations in all price ranges, from hostels and camping on up to luxurious small hotels.

The island is quite developed, with a small town full of restaurants, shops, tourist offices, bars, hotels and even a post office, bank and several ATM machines. Golf carts are used on the hard-packed sand roads instead of cars, which makes traffic somewhat quieter, though there’s always a steady flow of vehicles around the island.

Despite all that, Caye Caulker somehow manages to retain a slow-paced, low-key tranquil atmosphere. Maybe all the charming wooden buildings and cheery bright colors have something to do with it. Or maybe it’s primarily due to the Belizean people’s generally calm, go-slow attitude towards life.

For me, the best aspect of Caye Caulker is the phenomenal colors of the Caribbean Sea & sky and vibrantly painted houses, chairs, hotels and bars. Stunning colors everywhere.

Hanging out at ‘The Split’ midday, gazing at the aquamarine sea, suntanning, taking a cool dip, socializing and listening to Reggae music from the open-air bar is one of Caye Caulker’s best activities.

Hiking along the hour-long nature trail on the island’s east side, out past private homes, the tiny solo-runway airport, mangrove forests and long wooden boat piers is another great way to enjoy the lovely island.

Luckily for me, I was able to live at Caye Caulker three full weeks. I woke each morning early to do yoga, meditation and photography at sunrise before heading to the local fry jack shop for breakfast. I’d generally head to The Split for my midday immersion and venture to the west side of the island for sunset in evenings.

I also indulged in many photography shoots during my stay. This photo gallery presents several of my best images and gives an overall introduction to charming Caye Caulker. Please enjoy~
