(See photos of Lake Bacalar here)

Laguna Bacalar is a long narrow lake in southern Yucatan, Mexico, renowned for its astounding water colors. In fact, it’s local alternate name is Lake of Seven Colors.

As if imitating the neighboring Caribbean Sea, fresh water Bacalar glows in varying shades of aquamarine, teal, turquoise and blue, depending on weather and light conditions. Lake colors are at their most vibrant on calm, bright sunny days, when sunlight penetrates through the crystal-clear waters to the very bottom, exposing small rocks, fishes and sand.

The unusual & exquisite aquamarine colors are primarily due to the lake’s white sand bottom.

one of my photos of lake bacalar is this old pier & lily pads at Laguna BacaralQuaint Bacalar town resides on the lake’s long western shore. It features a charming central square and a historic stone fort, which sits on a small hill overlooking the lake. Fort Bacalar was constructed in the mid 1800s to protect the town from pirate attacks after residents got fed-up with several brutal attacks.

Nowadays Bacalar is a peaceful town that attracts a small but steady stream of visitors. It is also becoming more and more of an artists’ and musicians’ enclave, as various artists have relocated there from Mexico City and other parts of Mexico. A few interesting art galleries, cafes and restaurants have opened up. All sorts of art events are common and dozens of colorful, creative murals adorn walls and buildings around town.

In February, 2016, I enjoyed one full week at Bacalar, visiting the lake daily, walking, kayaking and taking photographs. This photo gallery present 12 photos of Bacalar from my visit. Please enjoy.
