PHOTO GALLERY: Photos of Campeche – Mexico
Campeche is a historic Spanish town located on the Gulf of Mexico in Yucatan, Mexico. Built in the early 1500s on the site of a Mayan temple by Spanish conquerors, Campeche was later enclosed within sturdy stone walls to protect it from pirate attacks in the late 1600s.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999, Campeche has been painstakingly restored, building by building. Today the cobblestone streets are lined by beautiful pastel buildings housing restaurants, hotels, bars and boutiques. Dozens of churches and several quaint plazas accentuate the charming seaside town.
The city’s fortress walls have also been restored. In some places, the wall has been cut clean with a cross section up for viewing by visitors. Campeche City Museum, located inside rooms within the thick walls, gives people access to wall-top views of both the city and the Gulf, as well as explaining the history of the fortification and town.
Campeche is full of delicious architectural detailing such as interior courtyards, elaborate doors and windows, wrought iron work and other features. Simply wandering the streets and discovering all the beautiful detailing is a great way to explore the town.
This photo gallery presents 30 photos of Campeche from my recent visit. Enjoy!
