PHOTO GALLERY: 12 Views of Agua Volcano – Guatemala

Volcan Agua is the most prominent of three volcanoes visible from historic Antigua. It’s so prominent, in fact, that it’s used as Antigua’s main directional landmark, lying directly south of the UNESCO World Heritage City.

The stunning, near-symmetrical volcano is visible from all corners of town, down each north-south cobblestone road, from rooftops, soaring above shop-houses and from all sorts of unexpected spots.

It’s great fun wandering around the charming town, turning corners and suddenly confronting Mt. Agua once again, at yet a new angle. It’s equally enjoyable photographing the mountain at different times of day and at different vantage points.

Backtrack several years…

While living in Japan for six years, I became enamored of Japanese woodblock prints. I collected them diligently during my final two years in Kyoto.

One of the most famous Japanese woodblock print series is entitled ’12 Views of Mt. Fuji’. As the name implies, it’s a group of 12 prints of beautiful Mt. Fuji volcano seen from 12 different vantage points.

In tribute to that series, a few years ago I created the photo gallery 12 Views of Mt. Agung – Bali, Mt. Agung being Bali’s highest and most sacred volcanic mountain. It’s also a near-symmetrical volcano, much like Mt. Fuji.

For my second collection of same-themed photo galleries, I’ve created this gallery showcasing equally stunning Agua Volcano.
