While living in Kyoto, Japan for 6 years, I spent every day off, spare weekends, and generous holidays exploring the country. I cycled many coastlines and rural roads, hiked mountains, visited onsen and mountainside temples, climbed a few volcanoes, and camped all over the place. I was equally astounded at the huge variety of topography and its sheer beauty.
