PHOTO GALLERY: Kyoto, Japan’s Spectacular Traditional Festivals
Kyoto was the ancient capital of Japan during the country’s cultural heyday. To this day, Kyoto is still considered Japan’s cultural heartland, preserving many of Japan’s traditional arts, festivals, handicrafts and ways of life. Dozens of spectacular annual festivals are staged around the city at temples, palaces, parks, mountains, and in the city streets.
While I lived in Kyoto for 6 years, I attended most of those festivals at least once, but usually several years’ running. Please enjoy this collection of photos from some of Kyoto’s unique and amazing festivals.
