12 Views of Toliman Volcano at Lake Atitlan – Guatemala

This photo gallery represents my third take on the famous Japanese woodblock print series “12 Views of Mt. Fuji”, which showcases the nearly-symmetrical Mt. Fuji from 12 outstanding vantage points around the Japanese countryside.

My previous collections include 12 Views of Bali’s Sacred Mt. Agung and, more recently, 12 Views of Volcan Agua, another stunningly conical volcano in Guatemala.

I was inspired to create each collection because of these particular volcanoes’ similarity to Mt. Fuji. In particular, all of them are nearly-symmetrical volcanic cones, which are surrounded by lush natural settings. In addition, they’re all clearly visible from great distances from many different places in their given countries.

As for this collection:

Mt. Toliman is one of three large, nearly-symmetrical volcanoes resting on the shores of stunning Lake Atitlan in west-central Guatemala. At least one of these domineering mountains is visible from nearly every point around the lake. In many places, two or all three volcanoes are clearly visible – at least when they’re not hidden in clouds.

I recently stayed at famed Lake Atitlan for two weeks. Every morning I rose before dawn to enjoy sunrises over the lake and volcanoes. Not surprisingly, each morning brought a distinctly different sunrise, light quality and color displays.

After sunrise I would have about one hour to continue photographing lake panoramas, lakeside scenes, flowers and other interesting visions I came across while wandering the lake shores.

Later in the day I’d take to the lakeside again to continue exploring and photographing volcanic views and sunsets.

For this collection I selected my best and most varied shots of beautiful Toliman Volcano – at sunrises, sunsets and in between.
