Kathmandu is a city dominated by brick: brick houses, brick shops and brick temples. Established way back in the 700s AD, the city’s gorgeous Newari architecture developed over several centuries, reaching it’s most glorious craftsmanship in the 1200s and 1300s AD.

The city is full of narrow stone, dirt and slightly paved streets that weave their way through all the brickwork. Many plazas are dotted around the city, some hidden down dark tunnel-like entryways off narrow stone alleys.

The grandest plaza of all is Durbar Square, punctuated by Kathmandu’s best Newari temples, the old Royal Palace and various religious statues & figures.

In 1979 Kathmandu’s Durbar Square was deservedly awarded UNESCO World Heritage Monument status.

The city’s narrow streets are packed tightly with small shops and street vendors selling everything from kitchen wares to clothes to art & jewelry to souvenirs for the thousands of tourists who flock to Kathmandu every year.

Simply wandering the city’s narrow winding roads, observing daily life and discovering small religious accents and hidden passageways is an exciting & rewarding way to explore this medieval city.

Kathmandu rests at the western edge of broad Kathmandu Valley, in the foothills of the Himalayas. The city is ringed by low mountains which can easily be seen from rooftops and hillocks on clear days.

This photo gallery presents 38 photos of this fascinating, still partially-intact medieval city at the foothills of the mighty Himalayas.
