Sitting just 8 degrees south of the equator, Bali is mainly a tropical island.  The variety of topography is quite surprising. Vast sweeping beaches- white sand, black sand, and stone beaches- grace Bali’s entire coastline along the ever-present ocean. Bali’s shores are most famous for surfing, but there are also calm swimming beaches and stunning coral reefs, excellent for snorkeling and diving, at several locations around the island.

Tropical trees, bushes and flowers smother the mountainous island.  Their sweet fragrances float through balmy breezes along with spicy incense from Bali’s plentiful temples. Lush terraced rice fields on mountainsides and flat rice paddies along the coasts present more green rural beauty. Everywhere there are exquisitely designed gardens.

Several volcanoes (considered sacred by the Balinese) peak their graceful heads out of the clouds randomly, adding an amazing backdrop to most coastal areas. Mt. Agung, the mother mountain, is the most stunning with its symmetrical cone peak. The volcanic slopes and crater rims support pine, bamboo, palm and mixed tropical forests.

In the far south, dramatic cliffs plunge into the sea at Uluwatu, mashed by crashing waves. A stunning temple perches atop the cliffs overlooking the vast sea that stretches south to Australia’s western coast.

Surprisingly, Bali also has extremely arid regions in the far northeast and cool, even chilly, regions up in the volcanic mountains.

Please enjoy these 36 images of stuning Bali, ‘Island of Gods’.  cheers, Lash
