In these expensive times, it can be hard to plan a cost-effective vacation. Especially to somewhere like Denver, which has a bit of a reputation for being expensive. Honestly, though, you don’t need deep pockets to have a great vacation in Denver. With a little careful planning, you can have an incredible experience in Denver without going over budget by a single cent. Free attractions, scenic hikes, affordable eats, and clever transport planning will all help you have the time of your life in the Mile-High City on a minimal budget.

Planning is key to affordable travel

The secret to enjoying anywhere on a budget is to plan ahead, and Denver is no exception. If you’re strategic about where you stay and how you get around, you can cut costs considerably with very little effort. For example, if you log onto a car-sharing site and hire a car from the airport, you can get around on a ‘pay as you drive’ basis, rather than burning your own gas, getting Ubers everywhere, or hiring a car you’ll only use sporadically.

Where you stay also makes a big difference. Staying slightly outside the Downtown area (for example, Capitol Hill, RiNo, or Cherry Creek) can save you a lot on accommodation without taking you too far from the city’s highlights. On the other hand, if transport is an issue for you, it might be better for your budget to pick a more central location and save money on getting around.

Take advantage of free attractions

You really don’t need a purse full of cash to have an enjoyable experience in Denver. There’s plenty to see and do completely for free.

  • The Colorado State Capitol offers free guided tours.
  • The Denver Public Library hosts free exhibitions, local history displays, and community events.
  • The RiNo arts district is home to a plethora of free public artwork, including murals, sculptures, and (often) street performances.
  • There are parks and walks all over the city. City Park offers plenty of gorgeously landscaped walks and great views over the city. If you have a bike, you can cycle to and around Cherry Creek Reservoir for stunning natural scenery and great views.
  • Red Rocks Park, just a short drive from Denver, has miles and miles of free hiking trails, winding between the iconic red sandstone pillars that Colorado is known for.
  • Lookout Mountain in Golden is easily accessible from Denver and offers unparalleled views over the city and plains beyond.

Get great experiences at low cost

Denver has a lot of attractions that don’t charge the earth for admission. Here are just a few:

  • Denver Botanic Gardens. This is an oasis of peace in the heart of the city. Beautifully laid out, with unbeatable potential for relaxation, you can get into the Botanic Gardens at very low cost. Some days it’s even completely free, so be sure to check the schedule.
  • The Denver Museum of Nature and Science offers a range of discounts and also has frequent free days.
  • Combine affordable eating with quintessential Denver vibes by wandering down 16th Street Mall, or hanging out at Denver Union Station.
  • Denver Art Museum opens for free on the first Saturday of every month, and offers a range of discounts and concessions on other days.

Eat well without overspending

Denver has a great casual dining culture that will fill your belly without draining your wallet. You’ll find plenty of family-owned eateries throughout the city, which offer great home cooked food at very reasonable prices.

You’ll also find a lot of food halls in the city. These are both trendy and budget-friendly. You can find a diverse range of foods and cuisines in the food halls, much of which will serve you generous portions of restaurant-grade food at street food prices.

For a really substantial meal that won’t put a dent in your budget, head to Lincoln Park or Westwood, where you’ll find family-run Mexican taquerias, which take it as a personal challenge to give you more food than you can eat for under $10.

Cost-effective culture

Denver’s cultural scene is surprisingly affordable if you know where (and when) to go. On the first Friday of every month, galleries open their doors for free art walks across districts like RiNo and Santa Fe. These events often include street performances, food vendors, and live music, as well as free art.

You can often catch free or low-cost concerts at venues like The Meadowlark. During the summer, the city puts on a range of free concerts in parks and at places like the Levitt Pavilion. Keep an eye (and ear) out for these.

If you’re up for a bit of exploring, you’ll often find very affordable live music in bars and clubs across the city. Often, you can enjoy the music for free (if you buy a drink), making this a very affordable way to absorb some Colorado musical culture without breaking the bank.

Have the best Denver experience without busting your budget

Denver isn’t known for being affordable, but it’s surprisingly easy to have a great Denver experience even on a strict budget. The city loves to show off its pride and joys for free, through things like free guided tours around the Colorado Capitol, free exhibitions at the Public Library, and plenty of free admission days at the multiple museums and cultural centers. You can also access a lot of the most stunning scenery in the Denver area for free, including Red Rocks Park and Amphitheater and Lookout Mountain.

If you don’t mind spending a small amount of money, you can access low-cost attractions like the Botanic Gardens and small concerts. And the friendly restaurants of Denver will take delight in filling you up for very little money.
