3 terrific travel adventures launched from London Luton Airport

If you’re spending time in the UK during a round-the-world trip or radical sabbatical, apart from its own charms, Britain’s a great staging post for adventurous weekends away in the rest of the world.

London’s Heathrow and Gatwick are Britain’s busiest airports — but nearby Luton often punches above its weight in terms of exciting destinations and last-minute deals.

Its advantages over its larger rivals are the easy availability of flight slots from carriers like easyJet, Ryanair, Jet2 and package holiday provider Thomas Cook.

In terms of accessibility, work began in April 2018 on a £225 million rail link that will soon connect the hub to central London in 30 minutes and if you prefer to travel by car, finding airport parking at Luton Airport is easy thanks to a choice of in-house and private partner options.

Now you’re convinced, here are three terrific travel adventures launched from London Luton Airport.

The Luton to Dublin flight is a short hop at only one hour and 20 minutes.

But it’ll transport you to a completely different atmosphere — with world-renowned culture and craic that makes the Republic’s capital a honey-trap for sightseers and partygoers all year round.

If you enjoy a pint of the black stuff, discovering Dublin’s best pint of Guinness is an honourable quest.

Alternatively, you can combine twin passions for alcohol and literature by embarking on a guided literary pub crawl in the footsteps of legendary wordsmiths like James Joyce and Samuel Beckett.

Swedish capital Stockholm is just over two hours from Luton and if you book ahead, it’s possible to bag a flight for under £50.

This beautiful coastal city is spread across 14 islands and offers plenty of delightful distractions — from watching the Northern Lights dance across the sky from Monteliusvagen cliff path to drinking delicious hot chocolate amidst the medieval architecture of Stortorget, the city’s oldest square.

And Sweden’s also famous for its approach to health and happiness — so enjoying the sauna at Hellasgarden in Nacka nature reserve will help you sweat out all the stresses of everyday life.

If you want sunshine and warmth, visit Stockholm between May and September, you’ll experience the best snow between November and March — while June or July are the optimal months for the Aurora Borealis.

If you don’t mind travelling a little further afield, the wonders of Egypt are just over five hours away on a flight from Luton to Cairo.

As you’d expect, finding historical attractions in Cairo isn’t difficult — the downtown Egyptian museum houses one of the world’s most important collections of ancient artefacts and you’ll find everything from pungent spices to pretty lampshades in the narrow streets of Khan Al Khalili.

But booking an excursion to see the Great Pyramid at Giza is a must — seeing the scale and artistry of one of the seven wonders of the ancient world in person is a real privilege.

The Giza Pyramid complex is about 18km from central Cairo and it’s accessible by taxi or public transport — but pre-booking an organised tour might provide peace of mind.
