If you’re getting ready for your self-catering holiday, getting things all sorted to take with you is no doubt high on your list of priorities. After all, it’s a unique type of holiday that allows you take full control of what you and your family eat and spend, also meaning you don’t have to stick to meal times and restaurant menus.

Therefore this type of holiday will always be popular as it has so many perks. Yet, if you’ve never gone self-catering before, or have done previously but would like to amp up your experience, we’ve put together some tips as it can sound like a bit of a challenge.

Find out exactly what is included in your room

Self-catering can mean very different things in terms of the facilities and amenities that will be provided in your room/accommodation. You’re fully within your right to ask the provider what you can expect to arrive to.

Try to get something in writing so you have proof when you get there. Some places will give you most things, whilst others will give you literally just the space to cook and do your own things. Therefore don’t forget about the little things like tea towels and surface cleaner.

Take as much as you can with you

You’re much more likely to be able to find all the stuff you and your family love at the shops you go to each week rather than when you get there, whether you’re in the UK or a foreign country. The chances are that they’ll be much cheaper at home, too.

Therefore, try and take as much with you, especially of things that will keep for longer, like pasta, gravy, oils and vinegar too. Important supplies like a first aid kit shouldn’t be forgotten either, as although your accommodation should have one, it will be good to have one for your room/family.

Just like you would when you get home, take the time to familiarise yourself with the local area so you can find the best deals on the items you need to stock up on. As a rule, avoid smaller ‘express’ supermarkets or newsagents and head to bigger ones instead as they’re much more likely to be cheaper and will give you a better deal.

When you arrive for your self-catering break at Pontins and other family orientated holiday accommodations, suss out the local facilities for things like baby equipment should you need them, too. The accommodation should be able to help you with anything you need.

Make use of the instruction manuals/welcome packs

Most self-catering places will provide you with a welcome pack and manuals to each of the main appliances and how to use them, such as an oven guide. When you do arrive and have started to unpack, take a seat and leaf through them all. When it comes to cooking the evening meal at 6 pm, you’ll be certainly glad that you did!
