PHOTO GALLERY: Images of Myanmar

Formerly known as Burma, Myanmar lies in SE Asia bordering Thailand, Laos, China, India and Bangladesh. The country is a kind of crossroads between the more Indian Asia & the Far East Asia. It’s a huge melting pot of people from its neighboring countries as well as various tribal people.

Geographically, Myanmar has two distinct climates. The southern areas, including the capital Yangon, are humid and steamy like the rest of SE Asia. But Myanmar’s central & northern areas are much drier, with more extreme hot & cold temperatures and distinctly different vegetation. Myanmar’s topography is quite diverse, including vast dusty plains, long empty tropical beaches, lush forests, mountains, plateaus and the long Ayerarwady River valley.

Myanmar is just now emerging into the modern world after several decades of trade sanctions held against the nation by most western countries. Myanmar is in transition. While modern electronics, appliances and motor vehicles have already inundated the country, the majority of Burmese still lead traditional lives. People in remote areas are still barely touched by the modern world. It’s a fascinating time to visit.

In this photo gallery I present a medley of 36 images from my recent 2013 trip through Myanmar: people, scenery, daily life, temples, markets and live along the Ayerarwady River.  Enjoy!
