Triund Trek – Overnight Hike in the Indian Himalayas

Triund is a grassy mountain meadow situated on a Himalayan ridgetop at 2842 M / 9325 ft.

Triund is a stiff day hike up from Dharamsala, with an ascent of over 1000 M / 3300 ft.

Once there, bare rock faces of neighboring high Himalayan peaks greet visitors on one side of the ridge, while panoramic views down to the vast Indian plains open on the other side.

Triund rests well above most clouds which float up towards the ridge, swirling between the surrounding mountains and creating ever-changing panoramic views.

Other higher cloud formations often obscure the nearby snow-capped rocky peaks from late morning until early evening. But around 5 pm those clouds dissipate, revealing the spectacular rock faces just a ‘stone’s throw’ away.

A Himachal Pradesh State Forest Department lodge house and several makeshift tea shops are situated at Triund, making overnight stays relatively comfortable. Lucky hikers can stay at the few lodge rooms.

Other options are rental tents and sleeping at the tea stalls. Staff light fires at night for warmth and light (no electricity or gas lanterns there!). The night sky becomes speckled with a sea of stars.

At dusk, those staying overnight are treated to spectacular sunsets above the clouds!

Please enjoy these 28 views of spectacular Triund from my recent 2-day hike.
