U Bien Bridge is the world’s longest teak wood bridge. It’s one of the most famous, popular and photographed destinations in Myanmar.

Located just 7 km south of Mandalay, U Bien Bridge runs for 1.2 km across a sprawling shallow lake in the midst of scenic countryside and surrounded by distant mountains. The lake waters rise and recede over the seasons, filling with rain water during monsoon season and slowly receding as the lake evaporates over the long dry season. Thus, the bridge looks quite different at various times of the year.

Regardless of the season, views from the bridge are varied and intriguing. Locals paddle wooden boats, herd flocks of ducks, bathe in the shallow lake waters and dry vibrant newly dyed yarns on the lake shores in Amalapura. The town is a major weaving center of cotton and silk fabrics.

A striking gold-encrusted temple rests on the far lake shore and a quiet road rims the lake.

U Bein Bridge is reserved for pedestrians only. Bicycles are allowed but not motorized vehicles. As a result, the bridge is a surprisingly quiet, tranquil and peaceful place. In the center of the long expanse, the only sounds are wind, birds, clattering teak wood planks as people walk or cycle past, and locals chatting.

Several pavilions are set up along the bridge for people to escape the elements, rest, chat, enjoy the serene environment and admire the stunning scenery around the lake.

All in all, U Bien Bridge is a wonderful place and one of my favorite spots in Myanmar.

Please enjoy these 20 views of this stunning teak wood bridge.
