PHOTO GALLERY: Puerto Rico’s Stunning North Coast
(See Photos of Puerto Rico’s North Coast )
Puerto Rico’s beautiful north coast, known as ‘Porta Atlantico’, offers over 150 km of diverse coastline that includes dramatic rock formations, long sweeping beaches, cliffs, small inland seas, rock-hewn tunnels and pretty offshore islands.
A series of Balnearios – public beaches and coastal park areas run by the government – are particularly popular with local residents on weekends and holidays. The balnearios provide safe swimming areas, bathrooms, picnic facilities and other amenities.
I explored Puerto Rico’s north coast with local friends, visiting many balnearios for free. Otherwise, entry fees for visitors are reasonable at about $4 per person.
We enjoyed many long walks on wild beaches backed by dense palm forests or sand dunes. We watched waves crash on offshore rocks and gazed at pretty tiny islands just a stone’s throw from shore.
We admired long, sweeping beaches from tall headlands and cliffs. Explored an abandoned rock-hewn tunnel. Swam in warm seas. Picnicked under shady casuarina trees. Watched shore birds stroll, fly and hunt for fish.
If you love wild beaches and rugged coastlines, be sure to explore Puerto Rico’s north coast when you’re on the island. Rent a car and head west from San Juan as far as you want to go.
Meanwhile, please enjoy these 15 images from my north coast explorations in 2016.
