PHOTO GALLERY: Beautiful Sydney, Australia
Many visitors to Sydney might be surprised to learn that Sydney is not Australia’s capital. That function goes to Canberra further south. However, Sydney is certainly Australia’s most famous and well-visited city, and for good reason.
Sydney offers a spectacular setting on vast Sydney Harbor, accentuated by the stately Harbor Bridge and the iconic Sydney Opera House, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most famous architectural wonders of the world. Indeed, it’s one of Australia’s most visited attractions.
Sydney has an intriguing history as a penal colony, with many beautifully-restored 19th Century buildings dotted about the CBD. The stunning Queen Victoria Building, Strand Arcade and St Mary’s Cathedral are the most famous, but architecture or history buffs will come across many others while exploring.
Several lush parks and landscaped gardens pepper the city area, often providing amazing panoramic views over the harbor, bridge and city skyscrapers.
Sydney also boasts world-class museums, lively weekend markets, a vibrant nightlife, trendy neighborhoods, Chinatown, ferry trips through the harbor to various nearby neighborhoods and coastal beaches, and a variety of tourist attractions.
On my recent 2-week visit to Sydney, I greatly enjoyed wandering the city streets and neighborhoods, marching across the tall Harbor Bridge, meandering through its leafy parks and gazing at gorgeous architecture.
