PHOTO GALLERY: Kawah Ijen Volcano – Java – Indonesia
Ijen Volcano lies in eastern Java. It’s famous for its startling milky-green crater lake & the collection of sulfur, which is carried out inside the crater.
Climbing up the volcano’s steep trail to the crater rim is a popular excursion for travelers.
I teamed up with two European couples to rent a van and driver for our day trip to Ijen. It was a strenuous 1 1/2 hour hike up, a fairly quick time apparently, as we were all quite fit. Near the top, we hiked through several visually striking terrains. The crater rim itself presents an otherworldly setting, all full of cracked dry oddly-colored earth engulfed in thick sulfuric clouds.
But the most striking scene is that of Ijen’s startling milky green crater lake and the nearly neon yellow sulfur pit, located lakeside. The lake pops in and out of view between billowing clouds.
It’s a spectacular hike, one I recommend to all hiking and nature enthusiasts visiting Java.
