PHOTO GALLERY: HUE AND HOI AN, VIETNAM
The two adjacent coastal towns of Hue and Hoi An were two of my favorite spots during my six-week tour of Vietnam. Like Penang, Malaysia, Hoi An was one of the major ports of call on the old Asian trading route. It’s packed with an eclectic mix of old architecture: Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, British and more. Many colonial buildings have been lovingly renovated to house boutiques, hotels, restaurants, cafes, and shops. Hoi An is a great place to find traditional Vietnamese arts n crafts, food, and tailors.
Hue, a bit further north, was formerly the capital city of Vietnam’s Nyguyen Dynasty. The Imperial Palace is still there as well as the old stone wall around the original city and many royal tombs. In both towns you can watch traditional Vietnamese daily life go on unhurried and little affected by modern life.
