Supertree Grove, located in Gardens by the Bay South, officially opened in June, 2012. But the lushly landscaped gardens and high-tech Supertrees were several years in the making.
(In fact, shhh, I sneaked into the park in May, 2012, to catch a close-up glimpse of the towering structures. Quite impressive!)
Supertree Grove contains one dozen Supertrees, varying in height from 25-50 M. Several other Supertrees are placed around Gardens by the Bay. A long walkway suspended in mid-air at 22 M off the ground, links many of the Supertrees and also provides astounding aerial views of the Supertrees, Gardens, harbor and nearby city CBD.
Supertrees have super powers. They mimic many functions of real trees, including collecting rain water, generating solar power and providing shade. Collected rain water is funneled off and used to hydrate the garden. Solar panels produce energy which is used to heat two large greenhouses in the Gardens.
And of course the Supertrees are fun, too! Attractive, innovative, and enjoyable. Visitors can meander along the suspended walkway, admire the amazing and ever-changing views, and even dine or enjoy cocktails at a chic restaurant perched on top of one of the tallest Supertrees.
If you’re visiting Singapore, I highly recommend spending a morning or half day at GArdens by the Bay, enjoying the lush landscaping and the unique Supertrees.
You can walk to the Garden from Marina Bay Sands Hotel, where a walkway leads you from the hotel’s third floor across a freeway and directly into the Gardens and Supertree Grove.
