SHANGHAI PHOTO GALLERY: SHANGHAI’S OLD NEIGHBORHOODS
China’s modern cities are massive urban centers packed with towering cement apartment buildings and modern shopping centers. China’s traditional neighborhoods, filled with small family-owned businesses, pastry shops, restaurants, tea shops and wooden homes are rapidly disappearing to demolition crews. When I lived in Shanghai, I had the great fortune to live right on the edge of one of the city’s last old neighborhoods. I used to wander it’s streets, fascinated, and buy all my food at street markets, hole-in-the-wall restaurants and a delicious little bakery around the corner. This photo gallery captures scenes from a nearly extinct lifestyle in Shanghai, China.
