PHOTO GALLERY: Balinese Temples

Balinese temples - UBud Water Temple - Ubud - Bali PHOTO GALLERY: Balinese Temples

Bali’s ornate, unique temples adorn the entire ‘Island of the Gods’. They come in all shapes and sizes – from modest little temples in the hills and forests, perhaps marking the site of a spring or decorating a holy Banyan Tree – to gilded family temples – to extremely elaborate, intricately carved town temples.

Large temples are generally constructed of white stone, red brick and elaborately carved wood doors. They are further embellished with intricately carved statues and other wood and stone carvings.

Pagodas and smaller temples are usually made of wood and may have thatch or tiled roofs.

The many different construction materials, carvings and embellishments means that Balinese temples exhibit a huge variety of forms.

This photo gallery presents a wide assortment of Balinese temples from around the island.
