Going to Greece?

Here are our top four suggestions for a perfect cruise itinerary

Greece , the beautiful archipelago that fans out into both the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas has been the holiday destination of choice in Europe, and it is easy to see why. With thousands of islands, and hundreds where you can actually holiday, Greece is all about choice, and there’s no better way to see this varied and wonderful nation than by island hopping on a cruise holiday.

So where should you go? Well here are a few suggested destinations to really make the most of Greece.

Corfu

Part of the Ionian Islands, Corfu hugs the country’s western coast, and enjoys that balmy Mediterranean climate that draws so many sun-seeking tourists.

There are plenty of attractions you can sink your teeth into, from wandering around the 18th century Achillion Palace, to learning the history of the island in the Archaeological Museum. There’s also great activities for kids, such as a visit to the staggeringly fun Aqualand, a waterpark that will keep the children entertained for hours.

Itea Town

On the mainland, there is the town of Itea, situated right on the Gulf of Corinth and home to one of the nation’s most vaunted historical attractions: Delphi. Named the centre of the earth by the mythical God Zeus , the mystical site of Delphi will give you a glimpse into Greek’s ancient past.

Once home to a powerful Oracle, you can see where she gave people her predictions in the Temple of Apollo. A brilliant trip for the whole family, and well worth the diversion from the sun-soaked islands.

Crete

The largest island on Greece is something of a dream destination; with a long list of gorgeous golden sand beaches and charming townships that litter the island, there are plenty of places to relax and unwind.

What makes Crete special though is its access to a bunch of brilliant historical, natural and cultural attractions, such as the incredible Knossos Palace in Heraklion, the Samaria Gorge in the self-same National Park, and the lovely, and romantic Chania Town.

Santorini

Santorini is unique, once home to a large and active volcano, the island of Santorini is what has been left after the volcano erupted to devastating effect thousands of years ago. What remains though is one of the most beautiful islands in Greece.

Make time to visit Oia, a white-washed town of narrow, blossoming alleyways and blue rooftops. Oia clusters on the northern part of the island, overlooking the caldera. Said to be one of the most beautiful places in the entire world to see the sun set, many visitors to Greece make a point of stopping off at Santorini to capture the romance of that moment.

If you’re planning a cruise holiday to Greece, make sure you pop a couple of these on your itinerary and you’ll be able to embrace the best of this ancient and fascinating nation.
