Boudhanath Stupa – Kathmandu, Nepal
Majestic Boudhanath Stupa is one of Kathmandu’s most famous and intriguing temples. Standing 36 M tall, it’s one of the world’s highest stupas and the tallest in Nepal. It was awarded UNESCO World Heritage Status in 1979.
Although Nepal is primarily a Hindu nation, thousands of Tibetans have migrated to Nepal since the Chinese Communist take-over of Tibet in the 1950s. A large Tibetan community now thrives in Kathmandu, having established dozens of Tibetan monasteries, stupas, restaurants and shops selling a vast selection of amazing Tibetan arts & handicrafts.
Boudhanath Stupa, its surrounding circular plaza and adjacent Tibetan neighborhoods constitute one of the major Tibetan enclaves in Kathmandu. Within the plaza are temples, Tibetan tanka painting studios, resturants and various shops.
Boudhanath Stupa towers majestically over the plaza, its exotic painted Tibetan eyes keeping watch over Tibetan life buzzing quietly around the enclave. Each aspect of the stupa has been designed with symbolism from Tibetan Buddhist teachings.
Colorful prayer flags strung from the stupa flutter in the breeze. A series of gilded roofs top the stupa’s spire while a row of brass prayer wheels completely surround the base of the stupa. Tibetan monks walk clockwise around the plaza spinning each prayer wheel by hand as they chant Buiddhist mantras.
Boudhanath Stupa plaza is a calm, clean oasis in the midst of Kathmandu’s chaotic, noisy and debris-laden city.
