New Zealand’s Stunning Coromandel Peninsula
Coromandel is a large peninsula on New Zealand’s North Island. It’s base lies south of Auckland on the east coast, but the long peninsula juts northward for 85 km, well beyond Auckland, forming the massive Hauraki Gulf between Auckland and Coromandel.
The peninsula gracefully protects New Zealand’s largest city from the vast Pacific Ocean, allowing Auckland to rest peacefully on calm, clear waters. From the city you can clearly see Coromandel’s hilly, forested bulk across the gulf on clear days.
Little-developed, Coromandel is a gorgeous natural paradise full of winding coastal road and stunning vistas. Driving around Coromandel, visitors will pass golden beaches, tufted sand dunes, jagged rock outcroppings, tall cliffs, forests, cow & sheep pastures, grassy hillocks and a few quaint villages & towns.
Inland on equally winding roads are narrow valleys, deep gorges, dense forests, mountain passes and more pasture lands. The diversity of topography, vegetation and terrain is quite remarkable.
Coromandel is one of the best places in New Zealand to see the majestic, native Pohutukawa trees, generally considered to be New Zealand’s most beautiful tree. They line the coast in many areas. In December the grand trees burst into bloom with thousands of large, vibrantly red flowers.
Anyone who loves the great outdoors should make a point of driving around Coromandel Peninsula when exploring New Zealand. It’s simply stunning.
