Reasons why you should visit the Riviera Maya

You’ve probably heard about Cancun and the Riviera Maya, and if you haven’t, well, I’ll start by telling you a little bit about these wonderful destinations that you have to visit at least once in your life.

Cancun is a tourist city in which hundreds of people live daily with the common goal of having the fun they seek in a paradisiacal destination, while at the same time enjoying the most incredible landscapes in its beaches suitable for the whole family.

One of the reasons I recommend you to visit Cancun is because of the proximity to many attractions and the diverse culture present in each of the activities you can do in this city. 

Full of beaches, Cancun is the ideal route to spend a weekend of relaxation and fun at night in the hotel zone, where near kilometer 9, you can find various attractions such as clubs, bars, and discos. Some of these are themed as the Coco-Bongo, located at km 9.5 of the hotel zone, where you can enjoy shows like Batman, tributes to the most impressive artists of POP and Rock & Roll.

Accommodation in Cancun is very accessible, although it is a little expensive if you want to stay near the beach (I recommend you look for accommodation in the city center because moving to the hotel zone will only take you 15 to 20 minutes at most.

The following cities conform to the Riviera Maya:

Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Sian Ka’an biosphere, Puerto Morelos, Puerto Aventuras

Akumal and Coba.

Playa Del Carmen

In this city, you can have an incredible experience. I love that you can walk around in flip-flops and swimsuit all day without anyone telling you anything because the freedom in clothing is unbelievable due to its beach tourism. I recommend you to visit the fifth avenue, the main tourist attraction in Playa del Carmen. Playa Mamitas will be your ideal place if you want to spend some time partying with live music and the beach in front of you.

If, on the other hand, you are looking for something quieter and want to travel with your family to this destination, you can visit Punta Esmeralda, the beach of calm in this city.

At night Calle 12 is the ideal place, full of restaurants, bars, and nightclubs, this street will welcome you to start living one of the best party experiences in your life, get ready not to sleep all night!

Playa del Carmen accommodation is very accessible. You can find hundreds of options for renting houses and apartments in Airbnb, Hostels, Hotels, and Resorts according to your budget and needs.

Tulum

Tulum is a city known due to the beauty of its beaches like Playa Paraiso, which is the most visited year after year due to its proximity to the archaeological zone of Zama. Besides knowing the ruins like the Castle located on a beautiful cliff in front of the sea, you can move down the coast through its beautiful rustic stairs to a beach with huge rocks and palm trees up to 5 meters high.

In Tulum, I recommend you rent a bike to move around the city if you want to have a great adventure. However, if you prefer to have relaxing times, you can quickly book a shuttle from Cancun Airport to Tulum and choose between its services as an open, group tour, round trip, or just one way. 

Everything will depend on the reason and duration of your trip.

Tulum has a lot of diversity in terms of accommodation, but Azulik, one of the newest hotels takes the prize in all aspects, 

Puerto Morelos

Puerto Morelos is probably one of the closest locations between Cancun and Playa del Carmen, and it’s a tiny city, although it’s continuously growing. I recommend you to visit its beautiful beaches and eat seafood at one of the famous beachfront restaurants.

This city is ideal for getting to know on foot, by car, or by transportation, no matter how you decide to get to know it, you will have hours of fun and while exploring it is ideal for taking a few local pictures.

At night the streets are bohemian with dim yellow lights, tropical music, launch and even classic rock, a must-do if you’re a fan of cool, quiet vibes.

Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve

Would you like to have an adventure close to nature? Akumal is the ideal place, but you have to make your visit in advance since it is an area protected by the government for the benefit of the environment.

Extra: Puerto Aventuras, Akumal and Coba

You can’t miss these three destinations, they are all different, and you can quickly get tours to each of them or a 3 in 1 visit, where you will see Mayan ruins, incredible cenotes, virgin beaches, and great amusement parks.

Cancun is often confused with the Riviera Maya because of its proximity. Although they are only a few kilometers apart, they do not share the same territory, nor the same attractions. You must know this if you are planning to travel to this wonderful destination. And, If you plan to make an excursion and your starting point is the Riviera Maya, you will have many options to choose from. As well as the rates are very different; the same goes to get Transfers from Cancun Airport, where the rates may change and even triple their price according to the distances you are going.
