PHOTO GALLERY: Viti Levu Island – Fiji
Fiji, as one might expect, is a beautiful tropical island with long sweeping white-sand beaches and picture postcard views. To be more accurate, however, the nation of Fiji is comprised of well over 300 islands. Only a handful are populated, and even fewer cater to tourists.
Located south of the equator in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, Fiji lies closest to the east coast of Australia and to New Zealand. From either country, flights take about 3 hours to reach Nadi International Airport, the arrival point for all international flights.
The entire island country of Fiji is very sparsely populated, with greater than 50% of its population residing on the main island of Viti Levu. Even there, only a few small towns and villages are sprinkled around the hilly, forest-clad island. Otherwise, Viti Levu is just nature: rolling hills, lush jungles, mangrove shorelines, long powdery beaches, calm seas and the vast sky.
Fiji’s other islands are even less developed, aside from several small islands in the Mamanuka and Yasawa Island chains, which have many small resorts developed specifically for tourists.
I just spent 10 days vacationing on Viti Levu, during which time I traveled around half the island, explored Sigatoka National Park, visited the capital city of Suva and several small towns, and stayed at two resorts in different regions of the island.
As a result, I present this photo gallery with 24 images of lovely Viti Levu island – its beaches, forests and coastlines; markets and local homes; and beach-side resorts.
