PHOTO GALLERY: Stunning Tibetan Temples
In the 1950s, China invaded and occupied the Himalayan country of Tibet. The Dalai Lama, Tibet’s spiritual and political leader, was eventually forced to escape and establish a new Tibetan government in exile at Dharamsala, India.
Since then, hundreds of thousands of Tibetan people have made the arduous and dangerous trek across the world’s highest mountains to escape the often brutal Chinese regime that is bent on wiping out their entire culture and traditional way of life.
Quite luckily for the Tibetans, the neighboring countries of India, Nepal and Bhutan have accepted Tibetans into their nations to rebuild their lives. As a result, Tibetans have established several enclaves, where they’ve built traditional-style temples, homes and communities.
They are systematically preserving their rich religious and artistic heritage: music, instruments, brass work, wool carpets, fabrics, clothes, elaborate paintings, architecture, language and delicious cuisine.
The Tibetan’s stunning. elaborate temples, stupas and monasteries follow some clear design elements and architecture, yet they are surprisingly varied in form, color scheme and detailing.
While I was traveling through Nepal and the northern Indian Himalayan state of Himachal Pradesh in late 2013, I was continually stunned by the gorgeous Tibetan temples and monasteries that I came across in various mountain towns. I have to say that I absolutely love Tibetan architecture! I hope you will too.
This photo gallery presents 35 images of colorful, stately Tibetan temples and their intricate detailing.
