Langkawi Hotel Review:
Ambong-Ambong Rainforest Retreat
Fancy your own private condo in the jungle?
That’s exactly what you’ll book yourself into at Ambong-Ambong Rainforest Retreat.
‘Retreat’ is the perfect name for this Langkawi get-away in the jungle. It’s not at all like a hotel or resort. There’s no lobby, no reception, no common sitting areas, no public bathrooms, no landscaped lawns, nor even a restaurant, bar or cafe.
Instead, Ambong-Ambong consists of two modern 3-story condo units holding three condos each plus two full three-story modern houses, all set on a very steep hillside over-looking Tengah Bay.
‘Retreat’ also aptly names Ambong-Ambong because it is really a nearly complete escape from the rest of Langkawi Island – an escape from its bars, restaurants, shops, visitors and traffic. At Ambong-Ambong you feel completely withdrawn from the world while cozily tucked up on the jungly hillside, surrounded by trees, birds, insects and sky. A few monkeys roam the premises and may pay a visit to your balcony, though I didn’t have any visits during my stay.
Ambong’s deluxe condos consist of a spacious bedroom with two separate sitting areas, a kitchen, a lovely balcony, a roomy tiled bathroom and abundant floor-to-ceiling closets. The luxurious king-size bed with down pillows and comforter is made up in fresh white linens with red accents.
The posh modern units are decorated in shades of white, beige and gray with red and orange accents. Plentiful windows, tasteful recessed lights and several attractive floor lamps provide atmospheric lighting. Natural fiber mats are placed strategically around the beige tiled floors.
A wonderfully refreshing balcony sits next to the kitchen. Although the kitchen does not have cooking facilities beyond a microwave, there is a toaster, electric kettle, french press coffee maker and a large fridge. Each afternoon your following morning’s breakfast is placed in your fridge by the staff. That consists of a selection of high-quality breads, fruit yogurt, sliced fruit, muesli, milk and juice. Freshly ground coffee and a variety of teas are always in stock in the kitchen.
For other meals you can eat out at several nearby restaurants or get take-out to eat in the privacy of your lux condo.
Naturally the condos have all other mod-cons: LCD TV, DVD player, security-coded wifi, private safe, hot showers and both ceiling fans & air conditioning, to suit your fancy.
Ambong is a place to chill out, relax, escape from the modern world. It’s a place to hole up for a day or two of blissful solitude.
If you do feel the urge to get out and stretch your legs, lovely Tengah Beach is less than a 10-minute walk from your room. If you want more pampering, the award-winning Ishan Spa is located at the base of Ambong-Ambong hill. Next door is Langkawi’s most famous Japanese Restaurant, Unkaizan, open for evening meals only. Many other restaurants are less than 15 minutes’ walk away.
