It’s not too late to grab a bargain and hit the slopes this spring, and if you’re not sure where to go for some top piste action, why not consider Granada?

The Andalucian city is close to the UK and served by many budget operators. All you need is your skiing gear, winter sports holiday insurance, some Euros, a Spanish phrasebook and before you know it you’ll be slaloming in Spain.

 The skiing

Granada’s Sierra Nevada resort boasts skiing at an altitude of over 10,000 feet and brilliant sunshine for most of the winter months. When the Spanish sun is shining, the views are almost unbelievable. From the top of the Veleta peak, skiers can see right across the Mediterranean to the Atlas Mountains of Morocco.

Translating as Snowy Range, the region has some of the highest peaks in Europe and offers extensive skiing as well as an uncharacteristically long season. It also has plenty of long wide open descents, an effective lift system, great nightlife, quality hotels and a guaranteed good time.

The weather

Of course, an important consideration of a good winter sports holiday is the quality of the snow. Nobody wants to head to a ski resort only to watch the rain pouring down day after day.

Thankfully, in the Sierra Nevada this is unlikely to happen. You’re almost guaranteed sunshine. The snow is usually tip-top too because resort organizers work extremely hard at preparing the runs every night.

By packing the snow down, even the shallowest of snow may be maintained for several weeks, even if it does not snow for prolonged periods.

 A helping hand

Even better, the resort is equipped with one of the most advanced snow-making systems in existence. So much so, that resort organizers guarantee skiing here even if it does not snow a single flake – a fact which has been proven in winters past when early snowfall was very limited.

 A break from the slopes

When your legs need a rest, the resort is only thirty minutes from Granada, one of Spain’s most beautiful cities, boasting the world-famous Alhambra palace.

As well as taking in the breathtaking beauty of the Moorish relic, Granada also offers visitors a variety of tapas and beautiful walks. Don’t miss the Albayzin, the city’s old Jewish quarter where you can easily lose yourself for a whole morning, if your ski legs can take it.
