Halloween Extraordinaire in St Petersburg, Florida

Happy Halloween!

For some unknown reason, the residents of St Petersburg, Florida celebrate Halloween with a special fervor. In the wealthy Northeast District particularly, home owners decorate their houses and properties with elaborate Halloween displays. Visitors can choose to be ‘killed’ by decapitation or the Electric Chair and join in other ‘creepy’ Halloween fun.

Around the neighborhood visitors come across a huge assortment of haunted houses, ghosts, goblins, skeletons, giant spiders and cobwebs, mummies, Jack-O-Lanterns, graveyards, tombstones, bats, devilish cats and other demonic Halloween creatures.

Not surprisingly, hundreds of people flock to the neighborhood from all over the city to marvel at the amazing displays, admire each others’ costumes and enjoy shows put on by circus groups and residents.

Visitors deck themselves out in all sorts of creative costumes. Some even include mini performances, like a group who imitated Monty Python by wandering around with a large cart to Collect the Dead, complete with original soundtrack, eerie bells and shouts to ‘bring out the dead’.

When I was in St Pete in October a couple years ago, I was astounded at just how elaborately Halloween is celebrated there. Since Halloween has always been my very favorite holiday, I jumped at the chance to head over to the Northeast District and join in the creepy fun. I spent most of my time taking photos of the amazing home and property displays.

In commemoration of Halloween, please enjoy these 30 shots of St Pete’s phenomenal Halloween celebrations.
