Scenic Pewa Tal Lake at Pokhara – Nepal

Pokhara is one of Nepal’s most visited destinations. It’s particularly famous for gorgeous Phewa Tal (Lake).

The large, shallow lake is surrounded on three sides by low mountains, the foothills of the Annapurna Range of Himalayan Peaks. The southern end of the lake is flat and opens onto a broad plain where Pokhara city is located.

A long pedestrian promenade lines the southern end of the lake, where most of the hotels, guest houses and shops are also located. The promenade offers stunning views that change throughout the day and over the seasons. Sunsets and sunrises are both spectacular when clouds don’t obscure the views.

Visitors can explore the lake and area by boat, on foot or by bicycle. Brightly colored wooden canoes are available for hire, either with or without a driver/guide. Canoe-ists can paddle over to Phewa Tal’s hilly western shores to visit a famous temple or simply meander around the placid lake.

A rough partially-paved rural road follows the eastern shore then northward through small villages and rice fields. Adventurers can rent mountain bikes and ride the scenic road for 1-2 hours in each direction. Alternatively, you can walk the road.

Pokhara is also the jumping off point for several Annapurna area mountain treks, including Nepal’s second most popular hike: the Annapurna Circuit Trek. As a result, Pokhara and the lake side are usually full of outdoors enthusiasts, including mountain climbers, hikers, cyclists and others.

Para-gliding and motorized hang-gliders have become popular adventure activities at Pokhara so on clear days the sky over Pewa Tal is often filled with colorful parasails and the buzz of motor-driven hang gliders.

Pewa Tal is a refreshing, peaceful and beautiful place to chill out for a few days or a few weeks when traveling through Nepal.
